Far from believing we have discovered a new technique, we are merely providing a rationale for the actions of every general in history, which serves to explain their connection with the nature of the problem. The next step is to provide a useful method for identifying the Center of Gravity. The first step in building this new Clausewitzs center of gravity is to agree on the intent and purpose of the concept.

According to the military concept of COG as developed by Clausewitz, there are friendly and unfriendly COGs depending on the result of the Lieutenant 110. Not by taking things the easy way—using superior strength to filch some province, preferring the security of this minor conquest to great success—but by constantly seeking out the center of his power, by daring all to win all, will one really defeat the enemy.

After the Divorce: Clausewitz and the Center of Gravity

Some people, of course, will not be convinced by these arguments, Clausewitzs center of gravity at least they will not be able to reply that "as Bonaparte, in his thrust towards the Rhine, was threatening Schwarzenberg's base, so Schwarzenberg was threatening Paris, which was Bonaparte's.

The Cog is the primary doer; it has the capability required to achieve the objective. This essay will address why understanding the psychology, culture, and the context in which an adversary operates is critical to developing strategy to defeat nonstate actors. But like the doctrinal definition of the Cog, the definitions for the critical factors also need revision.

If it is a shared COG, I want that power to be predominantly in support of my effort and not my opponent's. Bonaparte had thus gained so great a superiority over him as to leave no doubt that he would have to retreat as far as the Rhine, for no reserves of any consequence were stationed on that route. We are in love with the French Enlightenment because it promises a rational and analytical approach to fuzzy concepts like war and makes us feel comfortable in our technical rationality.

The COG may also refer to the physical objects of war or simply the will to fight and win the battle 111. If, people thought, these superb strokes in all directions failed to save him, at least it was not his fault. What the theorist has to say here is this: one must keep the dominant characteristics of both belligerents in mind.

The obvious solution is to accept Dr. Not a slavish devotion to 18 th century military theory which has not served us well and only confused generations of military planners. So how are intangibles accounted for?

Moreover, it is easier to achieve further successes where he enemy's morale has already been shaken by substantial losses; in this way, none of the superiority that has been attained will go unexploited. and be just as applicable. Unlike the current Clausewitzian based joint definition in joint doctrine, it is not a list of characteristics or descriptions separated by Clausewitzs center of gravity.
