In 1962, the celebrated critic and curator Giovanni Carandente invited the artist to exhibit his Grande Spirale in the landmark show Sculptures in the City, as part of the fifth Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. Like the latter, Colla was fascinated by the interplay of positive and negative space: an obsession that found its most potent expression in his spiral sculptures.
