Drowning Ruth What does the island represent? Throughout the book we learn of the events that lead to the drowning and what truly happened that Drowning Ruth. Several times I had to run from the wards to vomit. Why do you think the author chose such an unusual, visually graphic scene to mark the unfolding of their intertwined lives? Hardcover is a nice clean copy, almost new, small stain on rear cover. The characters that grew up as the story progressed, grew to exhibit the traits and characteristics of their familial ties.
The only reason I kept reading is to find out how Ruth drowned. Wry and guarded, Amanda tells the story of her family in careful doses, as anxious to hide from herself as from us the secrets of her own past and of that Drowning Ruth. Her prose is spare but bewitching, and she juggles the speakers and time periods with the surety of a seasoned novelist. I thought it was more like a family drama. It made me nervous knowing there were others who had talked about me, perhaps whispering in the hallways, ducking around corners when they saw me coming.
Throughout the book, new twists and turns are hinted at and revealed, and a new and dangerous development arises as Ruth grows older and makes friends with the popular Imogene.
But yet, there are many characters who are haunted, you see, and--and-- Okay, I'm starting to get lathered up again. I remember a lot of talk about Drowning Ruth when Oprah chose it for her book club many years ago.
However this book was so boring,it was extremely tedious, inconsistent and forgettable. No, it was deeper than that-she was inside me like a bone or an organ. Drowning Ruth offers tender gifts—the shore, the lake, the island, all keeping their own mysteries.
No wonder it's an Oprah book club favorite. A literal stink of gangrenous flesh and vomit, of ammonia and burnt oatmeal and camphor, of urine and feces. But after a while what had happened and what was Drowning Ruth to happen was pretty obvious, so it wasn't quite as compelling anymore. I didn't always know whom to trust, thanks to all the buried secrets. To reveal a little would be to spoil too much. They probably gathered in this very office, sipped coffee, shook their heads and tut-tutted me.
What is Amanda's connection to Ruth's friend Imogene and Drowning Ruth does she fear Imogene's marriage to Clement Owen's son?
There are things children are not meant to know.

But after a while what had happened and what was going to happ Drowning Ruth was an Oprah book a few years ago, which just supports my opinion that Oprah doesn't actually read the books before they become part of her book club and go on to sell millions and millions.
