The releases from Herbert, Clarke, and Asimov were really second rate pieces made for the benefit of their retirement plans and their heirs - not to mention their publishers. Had the Romans approached this aspect of their world differently, who knows what levels of technological accomplishment humanity might have reached by today. This is one of the reasons the Puppeteers were so successful at keeping the location of their homeworld a secret—explorers would be looking for a yellow dwarf as one could surmise that Puppeteers had evolved around a yellow dwarf from their biology and that they were comfortable on Earth-like planets without when their planet s were actually near a red giant.

Fleet of Worlds (Fleet of Worlds #1) by Larry Niven

Someone must scout ahead, and Kirsten and her crew eagerly volunteer. According to the Niven storyPierson was a crewman aboard a spaceship at a time when there was a revival of the ancient TV show featuringan animated character based on a hand puppet; Pierson accordingly described the alien he had met as a Puppeteer, given some resemblance of the head and neck with Cecil.

Fleet of Worlds Series by Larry Niven

We do not get that much about the human development after all, it is a fairly small book and has to cover a lot of territory involving three different speciesbut we learn to like the Fleet of Worlds, although the authors pen a rather dark picture of the humanity to which the colonists want to be reunited. Fleet of Worlds refers to the traveling planets of the Puppeteers. When Kristin and her human crew delve deeper into the history of their race and The Long Pass, they hope to find the truth behind the tragedy of The Long Pass. I did enjoy getting to read more from my favorite puppeteer, Nessus, and it feels like they're just laying the groundwork to a more interesting preamble to the Ringworld series.

In it is speculated that the Puppeteers are planning on moving to the now-uninhabited Core, isolated from potentially dangerous species - which would have either fled the galaxy entirely or been destroyed.

If I were new to the series, I would start at the beginning. Fleet of Worlds perform interstellar-scale manipulation of other species, inducing and directing large scale wars in order to achieve the goal of their own safety.

Fleet of Worlds is the first of a series of so far three books set in Larry Niven's Known Space universe, two hundred years before the events of Ringworld. There was much madness that year. At the beginning of 2017, the average age of the commercial fleet was 20.
